What, really, did we accomplish by the time the iron golem falls in the final episode? Nothing of substance, that’s for sure. Colbert is randomly alive, Kirche is randomly in love with him now for some reason, Henrietta is randomly in love with Saito for at least slightly more explicable (but no less stupid) reasons, and none of it feels like it amounts to anything. There are some scenes with the evil void user Sheffield, there are some scenes with Tabitha about her struggles, there are far too many scenes about Tiffania’s oversized breasts, Mr. More than ever before, it feels like a scattered collection of vignettes with very little connective tissue. I don’t have any sense of what was supposed to have been learned, what plot was supposed to have been progressed, what new addition to the lore and characters I was supposed to have taken away. But I barely remember anything from this season. Season 2 sucked, but at least it had a clear arc with escalating stakes and an ending that might have turned me around on the whole thing if it hadn’t shot itself in the balls in the final 30 seconds. Sadly, while this obvious effort does lead to more moments than the second season that I actually enjoy, it also means that the product as a whole feels even more splintered and unfocused than it ever has before.
